Questions People Ask

The Roman Spa PoolHow many rooms do you have?

Seventeen, including two suites, two junior suites, and two singles. All the rest are doubles or twins.

Is your on-line reservations system secure?

Yes, our email system is secure, so you are safe to send your credit card details. What's more, we use a high grade security certificate using a 128 bit encryption instead of the standard 40 bit, which means your information is even more secure.

What are your rooms like?

Each one is different, all are lovely. We’re not just saying it, everyone does. Some are formal, some are rustic, some are floral comfy, some elegant, a couple are mildly contemporary. You'll just have to see them for yourselves.

How many stars do you have?

Four, though stars are tricky things. Here in Spain they are given for facilities, not necessarily quality. That's not criticising the system, just pointing out that comfort, atmosphere, taste, and service -- the very things we take pride in -- are not among the criteria used to rate hotels for stars.

Are you open all year?

Yes, save sometimes at Christmas we close down to go off to visit our families.

Will we need reservations?

An absolute must for most of the year. Send an email, reserve@scottshotel.com or ring (+34) 971 870 100 or, even better, fax (+34) 971 870267. We have a two night minimum stay but will let you leave after one night if you absolutely hate the place. So far nobody has. We require a credit card number to confirm your reservation. It’s more secure to fax the card number than email it. We don’t take a deposit as such, but if you cancel within 15 days without an excuse that really convinces us, one night’s tariff will be forfeit.

Clock Detail, Blue SuiteCredit cards?

Yes, of course, principally Visa, Mastercard and Eurocard. We do take American Express, too, but only reluctantly because of their exhorbitant fees.

Pets?

No, sorry.

Children?

Over the age of twelve or in a bassinet. In between, we find they really don’t mix with good antiques, lace or silk, or other guests who are seeking peace and quiet.

Smoking?

Not in the bedrooms. Since we're in Spain, though, we are more or less required to have some spaces for smokers, so in the bar or on the patio or terraces is fine.

What about food, apart from breakfast?

One eats well on Mallorca. Apart from the dozen Michelin-starred restaurants on the island, the general standard of the local restaurants is high, especially if you like, and stay close to, Mediterranean-style cookery. The locals have been spoiled by their mothers' cooking prowess, so if a restaurant doesn't measure up it will soon shut its doors.

Here in town there are several good places, though without large claims to sophistication. Nothing wrong with simplicity, though, when all you are is hungry. Apart from three restaurants just a few steps from our front door, there are at least two more good places within about a mile. And of course there are others within a reasonable drive.

For sophistication and more extensive wine lists, there are three or four excellent places within a short taxi ride (given that you may not wish to drive if you're exploring those extensive wine lists), or in one case one stop on the train followed by a five minute walk.

You won't go hungry on Mallorca.

We heard about your beds. Tell us more.

Just the best beds money can buy. All hand made, Vi Spring, mostly oversized, deep coil pocket spring, and wonderfully comfortable. Some are extra long -- 7 foot (2.15 metres) or extra wide, (2 metres), and several are four poster. Take a mile of tempered steel wire, twist it into 6 inch springs, cover with 40 square yards of cotton calico, add armsful of lambswool and 30 pounds of cotton, 9 square metres of Belgian damask, then spend eight to ten hours handsewing it. That’s the basic bed. We then add Bloomingdales best long staple cotton percale sheets, silkysoft German goosedown pillows, and quality Merino wool blankets. The result is a night’s sleep you’ll dream about.

Early arrival? Late departure?

If we can, if other reservations allow, and we never charge extra for early arrivals, but late departures sometimes create problems so we charge a nominal fee.

Library DetailWhat about parking?

No problem. There are spaces both in front and at the rear of the building. No cost.

Do you recommend renting a car?

Yes, though we’re on the train line and some guests have done well with the bus system, even guests up in their eighties, which says something for both them and the system.

Can you arrange car hire?

Yes. We use an excellent local firm that will meet your plane and sign you up on the spot so that you can be on your way within ten minutes. They are competitive in price with the best rates on the island and are considerably less expensive, and in our view more efficient, than the brand names in the airport, even the ones who say they try harder.

Where’s the airport?

About 25 minutes away.

Somebody said something about a swimming pool.

Yes, and it's indoors so you can swim in heated water in the cooler seasons and be in the shade in the sunnier months. It's also one of only a handful of non-chlorinated pools on the island, with an oxygen electronic filter, so your eyes won't smart. It has an underwater bench with six massage jets, plus a three knot swimjet to give you something to swim against if you're looking for exercise. It looks like a Roman spa bath.

Do you have TV sets?

Well, yes, we can give you one if you really want one. We keep them tucked away since most of our guests seem to like to being in a TV-free zone. There are a couple in the public rooms if you want to catch up on headlines.

Handicapped access?

This is a source of discomfort for us. Really, no. Because the building is listed as a historical monument, or some such phrase, we weren’t allowed to add ramps or change anything, including the difficult bits, so we’d have to say we’re limited to able bodied handicapped people, if that makes any sense. What we’re trying to say, I suppose, is that if you can manage a few shallow steps then you'll be able to visit and enjoy our hotel. Just let us know in advance so we can make arrangements.

We think the other obvious queries are answered elsewhere in the site.
